Voice/Vocal Coaching/Guitar Lessons
Libby Johnson Music & Voice Studio, New York, NY
Hello, and welcome to my studio page.
I offer voice lessons/vocal coaching to students of all levels and ages. I've experienced first-hand that through voice work and coaching we are able to achieve freedom as singers in both our physical and emotional range. I’m dedicated to finding what is authentic and unique in a voice, and our sessions will help you uncover your true voice to sing with ease, confidence, and greater expression. I believe that singing is natural and fundamental for all of us, and can be not only a joyful mode of self expression, but can impact our lives in unexpected ways as we literally ‘find’ our voices. I work with students of all levels, from beginners to professional artists.
My method of voice pedagogy combines solid vocal technique, ear training and coaching on student material. I tailor lessons to the needs and goals of the individual, working towards executing songs with accurate pitch, comfort, and emotional range. In 2014 I attended Shenandoah Conservatory for Level III Certification in Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method, which is a body-based method of vocal training that draws from many disciplines. It is based upon voice science and medicine as well as traditional Bel Canto vocal training, and complementary modalities such as yoga, movement, dance, acting, and speech training, and various bodywork approaches. At Berklee College of Music I focused on vocal performance and piano and composition, and have studied privately with several teachers in New York who greatly influenced my approach and understanding of singing and teaching. Fundamental to my teaching practice are the years I've spent as a recording and touring artist, which is a school unto itself!
I teach beginner to intermediate guitar, working mainly with rock, folk and blues and pop. I generally work with acoustic guitar. The lessons include learning basic guitar technique, rhythm and fingerstyle, finger-picking techniques, music theory, notation, and mastering a variety of material. For students who sing, the lesson can be a combination of voice and guitar, and includes coaching on movement, performance and singing and playing simultaneously. I’m really interested in helping students and artists become great at what they do while developing their own sense of musicality, enjoyment, and self-expression.

This has been an incredibly busy fall, with returning and new students, and lots of great forward motion. This fall there were quite a few students training for the NYC Arts programs (Frank Sinatra, Fiorello LaGuardia, PPAS), and it was exciting to work in this concentrated way towards the goal of auditioning. Wishing everyone good luck!

Fall classes are heating up and I've been happy to see so many students who have been away for the summer, as well as to welcome new friends into my studio for voice training and guitar. I will be hosting a recital for all students to perform in in late fall, more details to come! - Libby

Summer is almost here and I want to express gratitude for another great year of teaching. This Spring I held my first evening workshop for adult guitar students, it was so much fun to share what we've been working on together, and we will be continuing on a monthly basis going forward.
"You are amazing, I cannot believe how much she has learned from you in 2 lessons!!!!! AMAZING!!"
"Hello Libby- thought I would give a you short update. She won that audition that she had when she last met with you, I think in no small part because of the extra work she did with you, and performed in a concert with the winners of each category. - she did well , certainly held her own with the better musicians! Thanks again!"
