Libby Johnson Music & Voice Studio, New York, NY
Hello, and welcome to my studio page.
I offer voice lessons/vocal coaching to students of all levels and ages. My experience is that through voice work and coaching we are able to achieve freedom as singers in both the physical and emotional ranges. Our sessions will help you uncover your true voice to sing with ease, confidence, and greater expression. I believe that singing is natural and fundamental for all of us, and can be not only a joyful mode of self expression, but can impact our lives in unexpected ways as we literally ‘find’ our voices. I work with students of all levels, from beginners to professional artists, developing vocal skills and repertoire. I have extensive experience in audition preparation/training for musical theater and for the NYC specialized arts programs including Fiorello LaGuardia High School, PPAS and Frank Sinatra School of the Arts.
My method of voice pedagogy combines solid vocal technique, ear training and coaching on student material. Education: Berklee College of Music, Bachelor of Music with a focus on jazz vocal performance, arranging, piano and composition. Post-college I continued training privately with several teachers in New York who greatly influenced my approach and understanding of singing and teaching. I attended Shenandoah Conservatory for Level III Certification in Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method, created by Jeanie Lovetri; a body-based method of vocal training based upon voice science and medicine as well as traditional Bel Canto vocal training. Jeanie's work with teachers in the form of ongoing workshops continues to be a great asset to my practice. Also fundamental to my teaching practice are the years I've spent writing and recording my own music and touring -- a school unto itself!
I teach guitar from absolute beginners to those working professionally, focusing mainly on rock, folk, blues and pop. Lessons include learning basic guitar technique, rhythm and fingerstyle techniques, music theory, sight-reading, notation, and mastering a variety of material across multiple genres. For students who sing, the lesson can be a combination of voice and guitar, and includes coaching on movement, performance and singing and playing simultaneously. My goal is for students to become proficient players and to explore and develop their own sense of artistry, musicality, enjoyment, and self-expression.
